Certified environmental management
To continuously improve environmental performance as efficiently as possible, the environmental management systems of each Group segment are increasingly modified to comply with international environmental standards. Around one third of total Group turnover is currently generated by certified companies.
Environmental management systems are voluntary instruments of preventative environmental protection with the aim of systematically monitoring and avoiding environmental impact. The standards most commonly used in Europe are the globally valid ISO 14001 environmental standard and the EU EMAS directive (eco-audit). Both standards oblige certified companies to comply with all environmentally-relevant legislation. In addition, EMAS also requires the elaboration of an environmental declaration. Depending on the type of environmental standard which is applied, each operational unit is also required to produce a separate environmental manual and environmental programme. The manual specifies a special organisation structure and lays down the associated responsibility of the staff, the environmental programme used to achieve the environmental objectives, and the measures required.
An independent expert regularly checks compliance with all of the regulations, and the implementation of the environmental manual and the environmental programme. Companies only gain certification if they fulfil each and every specification.
The introduction of these internationally recognised environmental standards enables us to measurably demonstrate our environmental commitment. The associated reporting also plays an important part in increasing transparency for our financial partners. TUI can also credibly document its environmental commitment through dialogue with other interested groups such as nature conservationists, politicians and the media.
