TUI AG and the Government of the Balearic Islands signed in Hanover today a further framework agreement for preserving and promoting the environment in the popular holiday region. “Both TUI and the Government of the Balearic Islands have for years been championing the cause of sustainability and the promotion of environmental thinking. We are aware of our responsibility as the market leader for holidays in Spain and the Balearics and so we started developing a sustainability strategy at an early stage,“ emphasized Dr Michael Frenzel, Chief Executive of TUI AG, when the agreement was signed together with the Minister for the Environment Miquel Àngel Grimalt i Vert. The basic idea of the agreement is aimed at developing tourism on the Balearics in an environmentally sound way that safeguards equally the natural resources as well as the future of the travel business. “ The agreement signed with TUI today underlines how essential it is to have cooperation between the authorities and civil society as well as to create an ever closer link between tourism and the environment,“ said Minister for the Environment Grimalt i Vert.
Back in 2005 the partners to the agreement signed a joint environmental accord; this is now being extended. The focus is on current issues such as climate protection and preservation of biodiversity. At regular working meetings concrete projects are to be developed as a means of helping to promote the environmental awareness of tourists, hotel partners and tour operators.
