The TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca continues to enjoy increasing support. Already almost 6,000 runners were registered in the week before the marathon; this corresponds to an increase of 30 percent in the number of participants. In the “most beautiful island marathon in the world“ the athletes will run on Sunday, 17 October along the promenade and through the urban area of Palma. Runners from some 56 different countries will be taking part. The number of runners from the United Kingdom is up as much as 100 percent at more than 650. “We are very pleased that this sporting event is continuing to grow and provide a wide range of inspiration,“ said Michael Lambertz, head of Group Marketing at TUI.
The 7th TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca is embedded in a comprehensive sustainability concept. Within the framework of the marathon shuttle bus services will be provided for the runners, and exhibitors are contractually obliged to separate any waste according to type and where possible to avoid it. The food and drinks provided to the runners will be mainly local products. Even the partners and co-sponsors of the marathon will be adhering to the sustainability concept, for instance utensils supplied to the runners will be made of ecological and recyclable raw materials. At the same time the social commitment will come to the fore. The TUI Marathon Palma de Majorca is supporting projects arranged by Unicef, the Peter Maffay Foundation, the RTL fundraising marathon and the Family Association. Moreover, every donation made by customers to the TUI Forest on Majorca, a reforestation project, will be doubled by the Group.
For the first time the start of all three running disciplines – the marathon, half marathon and 10-km run – will be at 9am. At 9:15am the walkers/Nordic walkers will start out on their route. It is nothing new for celebrities to run in the marathon on Majorca. This year the impressive sights on the route will be enjoyed amongst others by the extreme sportsman Joey Kelly, Olympic cycling winner Stefan Steinweg and the RTL fundraising team. Fighting it out over the half marathon distance to win the FIRST Business Running Award and the coveted title of “fastest company in Europe“ will be a number of international company teams.
The TUI Marathon supporting programme starts on the day before the event in the Parc de la Mar below the famous La Seu Cathedral. Activities include the Pasta Party, a street market and the 3rd Unicef Kids Run, at which the rock star Peter Maffay will fire the starting gun. A further highlight will be the After-Race Party in the evening on the day of the marathon at which the thousands of runners will celebrate their personal success together.
