Economic development in a global, mobile world
Mobility is an essential element of the business model of TUI AG companies – in the logistics and the tourism sector. The transport of goods and commodities of all types underpins the global economy and is becoming an even higher priority in the face of increasing globalisation. Holiday travel is also an indispensable part of people's consumption patterns for large sections of the population in Europe, North America, Australia and parts of Asia. Unfortunately, the pressure on the environment intensifies as mobility increases.
TUI is committed to protecting the environment
However, the increasing mobility of the travelling public is putting growing pressure on the environment and nature. The awareness that mobility has a major impact on the environment caused TUI to shoulder its environmental responsibilities early on and become an active advocate for the sustainable use of natural resources. As far back as spring 1993, TUI joined forces with Volkswagen AG and Deutsche Bahn to enlist the Market and Consumption Faculty (muk) of the University of Hannover for a mobility project. The aim was to develop concepts for holiday travel incorporating all means of transport and to raise environmental efficiency without restricting other crucial factors in the decision making process.
The information base is continuously expanded on the strength of discussions with international network partners such as carriers (airlines, railways), associations (DRV, ATAG), institutes (IöW, muk) and NGOs (e.g. NETZ – Network European Tourism for Soft Mobility). Environmental management systems, technical innovations, and process-optimised efficiency enhancement, are just some of the tools used by TUI Group to protect the environment and conserve resources. The following information highlights the commitment throughout the Group to reduce the environmental impact of mobility.
