Destination collaboration

Destination collaboration

Our customers consider the environmental quality of their holiday destinations to be one of the main factors determining the quality of their holiday – it therefore plays a crucial role in holidaymaker satisfaction. Making sure that nature stays intact is the only way of guaranteeing the long-term economic success of the tourism business, our core activity here at TUI AG. In the eyes of holidaymakers, intact nature includes crystal-clear water and clean beaches, unsullied countryside, viable ecosystems and high species diversity – as well as pedestrian precincts, and organised waste disposal and animal protection measures at holiday locations.

One of the main priorities of TUI AG Environmental Management's work is therefore collaboration in our holiday destinations to promote sustainable development with the aim of safeguarding the natural foundations of our tourism business. A crucial part is played here by intensive dialogue, close cooperation, a great deal of government lobbying, and persuasion of contractual partners such as hoteliers, agencies and environmental protection organisations in the locations themselves. Together with international and local environmental initiatives, we endeavour to get across to decision makers in the destinations that high environmental quality standards can safeguard the economic basis for tourism and therefore the livelihoods of their citizens (and voters!). And there is no doubt that tourism can also be a better alternative for local inhabitants because its smaller environmental footprint compared to numerous industrial or agricultural sectors goes hand-in-hand with higher levels of social productivity.

We are therefore firmly convinced that tourism has a very promising future and can become the leading economic sector, when shareholder value is matched by “social value” for the people at the destinations.
