Mangrove forests play a key role as a natural buffer against coastal erosion, floods, tidal waves and storms. Current studies have also shown that one hectare of mangroves absorbs around 3.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year and thus helps to break down CO2 gases.
The key aims of this project, coordinated by the Global Nature Fund (GNF), are the establishment of mangrove nurseries, reforestation of damaged mangrove forests and the construction and operation of regional environmental education centres. TUI AG sponsored the planting of 500 mangrove trees in 2009.
Project goals/results
- Reforestation and sustainable use of mangrove forests
- Protecting and conserving mangrove forests as carbon sinks
- Protecting the great biodiversity in the mangrove forests
- Protecting key spawning grounds, preventing erosion and protecting coastlines
- Improving the water quality in mangrove wetlands
- Providing protection from tsunami aftermath
- Creating new employment opportunities for people from nearby communities in the mangrove nurseries and environmental education centres
Reforestation will play a crucial role in protecting ecosystems and preserving the livelihood of the local population in the long term.
TUI AG supports this project, run by the Global Nature Fund (GNF), through the sustainability initiative Futouris e.V.
