TUI subsidiaries Hapag-Lloyd Flug and Hapag-Lloyd Express get closer Goals of the cooperation model: lower flight costs and more departures

Hanover, December 19, 2003

The TUI Group will reduce its flight costs in the German market in order to significantly increase its efficiency and competitiveness. This will be achieved by closer collaboration of the two Group airlines Hapag-Lloyd-Flug (HLF) and Hapag-Lloyd-Express (HLX), who now have implemented a joint Majorca flight schedule for summer 2004.

"With the collaboration now initiated between Hapag-Lloyd-Flug and Hapag-Lloyd-Express, we have launched the migration of the two business models in our airline sector," says TUI CEO Dr Michael Frenzel.

TUI will achieve lower flight costs by a combination of several measures: HLX optimises its own route network and employs the released capacity on the Palma de Majorca run. This complements perfectly the flights provided by HLF on this important route. At the same time, Hapag-Lloyd Flug expands its tourism route network from the airports at Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Münster-Osnabrück, Cologne and Karlsruhe in particular.

This increases the frequency of scheduled daily flights to Majorca by 78 per cent. The number of daily scheduled departures at attractive times goes up from nine to 16. These measures and the closer cooperation of HLF and HLX significantly increases capacity utilisation of the German TUI fleet. "Herewith TUI is well prepared for the increasing competition on this tourism route," adds Frenzel.

Besides an improved efficiency, this cooperation of the two TUI carriers benefits above all the holidaymakers. In future, they will have the choice of two scheduled flights per day on TUI's Majorca Express from several German airports. This is a considerable improvement in service for seat-only passengers in particular.

In addition to its existing city routes, HLX will also fly twice a day to Majorca from Hanover, Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart. Two flights per day from Munich and Frankfurt and one daily flight from Münster-Osnabrück, Cologne-Bonn, Berlin-Tegel and Nürnberg will be added to the HLF flight schedule.

TUI will operate a total fleet of 45 aircraft serving the German market next summer: Hapag-Lloyd Flug will continue to fly with 34 aircraft, while Hapag-Lloyd Express will increase its fleet by one aircraft to a total of eleven.
