YoD ambassador Christoph Wandratsch swims across the Strait of Gibraltar in record time
Christoph Wandratsch after setting the new record
Christoph Wandratsch is supporting the UNEP initiative “Year of the Dolphin 2007“ as an ambassador and wants to perform sporting activities to draw attention to the dangers threatening these fascinating animals and so provide some active help.
Wandratsch, a teacher, feels it is a “very special motivation to set a record on behalf of dolphins“. The 40-year-old from Haiming in Bavaria set a new record for swimming across the Strait of Gibraltar without wearing a wetsuit. Wandratsch took exactly 2 hours 52 minutes to swim the 15 km from the Spanish Tarifa to the coast of Marocco. “It was a tough race against time, especially towards the end of the crossing,“ said the two-times long-distance European champion over 25 km (1991 and 1995) after setting the new record.
